Single Use Plastics

Single Use Plastics - what are they?

Put simply, they are plastics that are disposed of after use. Things like plastic bags, straws, drinks bottles and most food packaging are all single use.

Why are people bothered about them?

Aside from the widely reported issues of plastic pollution in our oceans and seen at the side of roads throughout the world, many plastics end up in landfill as most are not recyclable (even the recyclable ones are not always recycled). Plastic will not decompose into natural substances (like compost), it will eventually break down into small particles which will long outlive us. Whilst breaking down, the toxic chemicals used in the creation of the plastic leak out and will inevitably make their way into our food and water supplies.

What can we do about it?

Reduce, reuse, recycle. That is - reduce your single plastic use, reuse and re-purpose other plastics and properly recycle those you no longer need. It isn't going to be an overnight fix and let's not forget that many plastics have been used for good, but everyone can do their bit to help our Planet.

So how do we start?

Every little bit helps! Imagine if every person in the UK made one small change, it would have a huge impact! 24% of the UK adult population have a dog with an estimated population of 8.9 million pet dogs in this country alone - if only half of those people swapped their plastic shampoo bottle for one of our solid dog shampoos that would save 4.5 million single use bottles!
